SPECIAL INVITATION

Due to ever increasing numbers Westend FC now run THREE open age men’s teams in the District League.

Many of the new signings are players who have come through the junior section at Westend and are keen to continue playing with the club in the local open age District League.

This season we are holding YOUTH training sessions FREE OF CHARGE every Tuesday evening (8.00-9.00pm).  These sessions will give our younger players the best possible preparation for the higher level of football they will experience when they are ready to play in the Open Age section.

Players from this season’s Under 16 Lions (managed by Andy Westwood) and Nick Walter's Tigers are invited to join in these sessions.  Nick (Open Age Reserve team manager) and Mick Thwaites (Open Age 'A' team manager) will have a warm welcome for every player regardless of ability.

Why not get an extra hour of football every week at Westend?

Anyone interested should turn up at 8.00pm Tuesday nights

WESTEND TARGET BOOTS FOR SOUTH AFRICAN VILLAGE

Huddersfield football club Westend have launched an appeal to send football boots to South African youngsters.

They  have set themselves a target of collecting 400 pairs of boots (equal to one pair for each child at the Club).

Organiser Smiling Ubisi from the Kunavelela Project commented: “It’s really good news that Westend FC will be supporting us again this year especially as we have more and more boys joining the team”.

The Salendine Nook based club are also appealing for shirts, shorts, socks and other items of equipment that they can also send.

Financial aid towards transport costs to South Africa will be very welcome.

Kunavelela means "To Encourage Hope" in the local Shangaan language which is exactly what the founders, Harry and Smiling Ubisi, two brothers from the village have been doing since 1997.

Westend FC support South African village

Harry and Smiling Ubisi created the registered non-profit charity the Kunavelela Community Project in 1997 "to encourage hope" in their rural community Hluvukani, that is battling with the ravages of AIDS, AIDS orphans, endemic tuberculosis, malaria and a dire lack of proper sewerage and clean drinking water.

One of the project's main aims is to create a better life through sport. Harry and Smiling (pictured above) have started a soccer team, the Hluvukani Blackbirds and need help to kit the players out.

FOOTBALL IS ALWAYS FUN

 Bafana Bafana style

Notice the bare feet and home made goals

Pitch a bit short of grass?

No FIVE star hotels here

Do they look bored?

Eat your heart out England

One of Kunavelela Community Projects other main aims is to help the community grow enough food to feed everyone. There are very few working adults in the villiage. As in so many rural communities, the majority have either died of Aids, leaving orphans behind, or have moved to the cities looking for work.

This means that many of the grandmothers and grandfathers are unexpectedly looking after up to 6 children. The grandmothers survive on their state pensions of around zar 950, or 100 euro a month.

Can you imagine trying to feed 6 growing kids on 100 euro a month?

This issue is being addressed through the Gogo's (Grandmother's) Veggie Garden.

Land has been purchased from the tribal authority to create a communal vegetable garden. The Grandmothers of the village cultivate the garden ensuring a supply of fresh fruit and vegetables for their families and which allows the more effective use of government pensions for other provisions.

With money raised by the Kunavelela project, the area has already been completely fenced off, keeping goats and cattle at bay.  In addition, farming implements, seeds and other necessary equipment have been purchased to allow a variety of winter and summer crops to be planted and tended with ease.

They are now beginning to start to raise funds for small-scale poultry farming which will provide additional sources for income, employment and food supplies.

They will begin by buying 20 hens and a rooster, and enough chicken wire to make a hen house. The fresh eggs will be given to the young, the elderly and the sick. Extra eggs could be sold locally to raise money to buy more hens, and so on.

Birmingham City striker Cameron Jerome  spent over two hours signing autographs and watching the latest crop of talent enjoying football at the Club.  Cam scored 10 goals in the Premier League last season but has a lot to do to match the 90 he scored in one season for Westend FC!

Good luck next season Cam

Kunavelela Community Project

Harry and Smiling Ubisi, two brothers from Hluvukani Village are making concrete steps toward improving and giving hope to their rural community. What started out as two people wanting to make a difference, giving young boys the opportunity to play soccer in a safe environment and provide them with guidance and support has grown by leaps and bounds. Harry and Smiling’s dreams of revitalising their village are slowly taking form.

Westend FC are very proud to support this Project

The Under 10s warm up before a match

Hluvukani is a rural village situated at the foothills of the Drakensburg Mountain range in Mpumalanga Province of South Africa and is affected like so many other rural areas by unemployment, poverty and HIV/Aids. Harry and Smiling started encouraging young boys to play soccer as a means of keeping them motivated and out of mischief. Now they not only help the boys with their soccer skills they have made incredible progress in establishing a vegetable garden that will assist the community by providing additional food resources and social support.

In February 2008, Sheila Webster spent her holiday sewing bibs for the team from fabric purchased by the Transboundary Elephant Research programme. A total of 48 bibs were distributed to the team in April 2008. The boys are now able to practice defence tactics for different positions and this is helping to up their game for competitions.

In September some of the funds donated to the project were used to purchase fifteen new leather soccer balls and forty training cones. Harry handed these out to a crowd of enthusiastic children when he went home on leave. All of the sports equipment purchased or donated is being kept at Harry’s house under the watchful eye of his wife Flossy and is handed out before practice sessions whenever time is available.

Since the new balls and training cones now form part of the regular practice sessions, Harry has implemented a number of training exercises he learnt on a Tanda Tula soccer workshop.
